Answering Islamic questions about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
In Surah (ie Chapter) 4:157 which is the main verse on this matter (in the Sahih International) Qur’an it suggests that Jesus Christ was never crucified because a switch took place. It says the following:
And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah .” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
Dr Muhsin khans translation of the same verse in the Qur’an says:
157. And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,”- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) ]:
But we know from the eye witness account of John 19:16-17 and in particular Matthew in chapter 27 verse 27 Matthew 27:27 of the Bible that the soldiers of the garrison (which we know were made up of between 2000 and 8000 soldiers) surrounded Jesus and so He could not have been switched for the following reasons:
a) Jesus was taken into custody by the soldiers alone and so there was no one to take His place.
b) Too many soldiers surrounded Him to make a switch possible. Critically, these were enemies of Jesus seeking to humiliate and inflict pain on Him and not on some random person.
To assume that you can fool more than 2000 soldiers is unrealistic.
c) Jesus Christ was whipped almost to death. So if a body was to replace Him, it would have to have been beaten by a professional using the same tools during that same hour and to the same extent, in the same way, in the same location, without being seen or heard, with the same blood, flesh and bone exposed after the event.
To insist that this act can be replicated in the way just described is not plausible.
d) Although Jesus often dressed like His disciples, the body of Christ on this occasion can also be confirmed as His because a number of soldiers carried out the following insults and assaults described in Matthew 27:28-29
1) Some soldiers stripped Jesus naked so nothing was hidden and they or other soldiers gambled for possession of Jesus’ clothing. (Matthew 27:35)
2) At least one went close enough to place a crown of thorns on His head.
3) Other soldiers spat on Jesus.
4) Others beat Him further with a branch.
The identity of Jesus Christ is thus confirmed by each of these close proximity active hostile witnesses.
e) Jesus Christ who we know to be, among other things, “a true prophet,” would not have participated in a body switch that deliberately deceived His family, friends and disciples.
Such an assertion is inconsistent with the actions of such a true prophet, to say the least. There is also no record of Jesus Christ lying or deceiving others but He did correctly predict the manner of His death and resurrection. Matthew 17:22
f) Only on the third day did God raise Jesus Christ from the dead to allow Him to continue to preach for another forty days to confirm who He claimed to be, before being taken up, back into heaven.
See Matthew 28:1-8
Roman discipline
If any soldier did not properly guard a prisoner, they were put to death; as seen in the following account, where the prisoner, Apostle Peter, escaped from King Herod.
Acts 12:18-19
“Then, as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter.
But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death.”
So to say that many Roman soldier took part in a switch that would cost all those involved, their lives, without a satisfactory explanation, by the Qu’ran, is not plausible.
The language & authors of the Qur’an?
Most Islamic Imam’s (clergy) and Muslim scholars suggest that the Qur’an can be relied upon because, among other things:
a) It has lost nothing through translation, as it was written, and continues to be printed in Arabic.
b) That Arabic is an original language.
c) Some scholars argue, and many of the Muslims we meet on the streets of London believe that Arabic is the language spoken in Paradise (heaven).
d) Although the prophet Mohammed was illiterate, we are still asked to trust his UNNAMED companions who were with him, to write the alleged truths about his teachings.
Unfortunately, these positions are not correct.
Arabic is not an original language. It is derived from the Proto-Semitic language group. Specifically, the Ancient Aramaic alphabet is adapted from the Phoenician alphabet. Clearly, God as an infinite being, will not allow Himself to be restricted to the 22 letters that make up the Phoenician alphabet; and although Islam accepts many of the biblical prophets as well as Jesus Christ and some of His disciples, they reject the teachings of the Apostle Paul. However it was Paul who revealed in his writings in the Holy Bible that the language spoken in heaven is not any of the languages spoken here on the earth, but it is in fact an unknown tongue. See Romans 8:26, 1 Corinthians 14:1-2 & 1 Corinthians 14:13-15.So the work of every religious author throughout history and the world is in fact a translation. During direct communication, the Spirit of God will normally speak to each of us, in our own first language. Finally, by contrast, the 66 books of the Bible were written by at least 39 named authors over a period of 1,500 years, all confirming the central message about who created life, and how it is to be lived.
Why the Islamic understanding of God’s forgiveness is not enough.
God’s forgiveness makes the sacrifice of Jesus Christ unnecessary?
Unfortunately, this is not correct. There is a consequence for every sin and it would be unjust not to reflect this reality. Although God’s love has indeed moved Him to forgive those who turn to Him, God is also just and it would be a violation for someone not to pay the price for committing a sin. John 1:29. So on earth authorities are supposed to execute a just judgement in each case it is aware of, while in heaven, Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sins for those who believe. Romans 8:1-4. John 3:16-17. Matthew 26:26- 48. Matthew 27:35- 54.
This atonement by Jesus Christ means that the legal requirements in heaven were and are met. 1 John 2:2
Mohammad Vs Jesus
Who is “the last prophet”?
The Muslims that we have spoken, to who often read the Bible in conjunction with the Quran, cite Deuteronomy 18:18 from the Bible:
“I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.”
Muslims believe that these words by the “prophet Moses”, refers to the coming of Mohammad. Unfortunately, this is not correct.
In study Bibles with a extensive cross reference system to assist in the study of the Holy Scriptures there is an “a” at the start of this verse which has the relevant cross reference to John 1:45 in the Bible which reads as follows:
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
So the Old Testament prophetic bible scriptures do not point to Mohammad but the Jesus Christ.

Next step
As a Muslim is it right to say what Allah did not say? The Qu’ran does not say that Allah switched the body. If you now recognise that the explanation of the “switching of Jesus Christ” is flawed and incomplete, then go to the “Next step” page and pray the “Salvation prayer.”
